AUSTIN, TX – Designed for a public park, this 30-foot tall sculpture honors Austin’s heritage oaks and historic moon towers through a fusion of art and technology.
Oaks are a symbol of Austin and a constant presence in the city. The Moon Tower sculpture mimics their structure through perforated metal cladding that transforms from a dense base to a leafy top structure. The sculpture’s skeletal frame draws inspiration from its namesake, the city’s historic moon towers. When lit, the vertical lighting element glows softly, while at the base, light projects the cladding pattern onto the surrounding pavement. Changes in time, weather and events are also marked through variations in color, intensity and animation of the interior light element. As a celebration of the past and present, Moon Tower fuses art and technology to recall the park’s heritage, while establishing its relevance for the future.
